Land trip
Just got back yesterday afternoon from my land trip. It was a wonderful experience. The couple that I went with, Jeannie and Eliyah Padluq, were just the nicest people one could hope to meet, and they were so patient with me as I tried to learn some Inuktitut. In addition to me they also had three young men staying with them. These are young Inuit who have managed to get themselves into trouble with the law for one reason or another, and they are sent 'on the land' with various people so they can get some perspective on their lives. They turned out to be great guys and accepted me completely and showed me around, played cards with me, and were generally just good companions. Jeannie and Eliyah's son Luli joined us as well. Although polar bears are common in the area, we didn't get a chance to see one, although there were fresh tracks about 400m from the cabin out on the ice. No walrus either, but I still had a great time and got in the most snowmobiling since the winter arrived. The weather didn't cooperate either, as it was extremely windy all day Wednesday, and we didn't get out much. Tuesday afternoon we built an igloo. I would have liked to stay overnight in it but needed caribou skins for the floor. (I didn't bring my air mattress). I took over 100 pictures, and wish I could send more, but it's just too slow. I'll probably include a few over the next couple of posts.
