on the land
Today as part of our 'cultural activities with which the school starts the year we took the high school students on a hike to the huge sand bar created where the Sopher R. enters Sopher L. This lake is partially salt and has tides created when the falls, where we were yesterday, reverse. The result is this big sand bar, about 100 acres of almost flat sand. The kids had a great time swimming (and getting anybody else in range wet), golfing (I was surprised at the number of kids who have golf clubs), and generally just letting off steam as teenagers. The hike was about 20km long all together and we had lots of tired kids by the end (not to mention tired, old teachers). It was a beautiful day, with warm temperatures and no winds. No wind is a bad thing because then there are many black flies. By lunch however, a nice breeze came up to blow the flies away and we were able to enjoy the day. Tomorrow we may get the teachers boat ride in the afternoon that we were supposed to have last week.
